Sahba Motallebi Lecture with MDC Honors College

Known as the world’s best female Tar player, Sahba Motallebi, composer, author, and instructor, presents a lecture for Honors students at Miami Dade College. Motallebi, accompanied by Percussionist Naghmeh Farahmand, will introduce Persian music systems, Dastgah-Avaz, her central instrument the Persian Tar, as well other Iranian instruments. Persian music improvisation, a key aspect of Persian music in general, and the practice of the Tar in particular, will be presented. Music demonstrations include traditional and original compositions which exemplify Persian performance improvisation. The presentation also includes discussions about the artists’ backgrounds and cultural identities.
